Our beloved Folk Hall has been undergoing an impressive transformation over the last few months and we can’t wait to get back in there and enjoy it with you. It looks incredible! With the integrated post office and York Explore library, as well as the new and improved café, the Folk Hall really has cemented itself as the heart of the New Earswick community for many years to come.
We haven’t been resting on our laurels either! As well as planning an exciting new season of films we have made some big changes! We have been lucky enough to receive some funding from One Stop Shop’s ‘Carriers for Causes’ initiative, New Earswick Resident Forum, City of York Council and New Earswick Parish Council! We can’t tell you how grateful we are to know that these important community organisations value what we bring to the area and support us in our work.
Who we are
For those of you who don’t know, we are an independent community cinema run by a small group of passionate volunteers. We currently screen one film a month in New Earswick Folk Hall’s beautiful main hall. We received national lottery funding through the British Film Institute to acquire our high definition projector and community funding from John Lewis to buy our gigantic 16 foot screen! Not to blow our own trumpet but we now are basically A PROPER CINEMA – Only much, much cheaper!
We were borne from a desire to bring people together through film and strive to be even more than just a cinema. As well as screening blockbusters and family favourites, we want to create events around award winning films that shed light on subjects affecting our society. Already this year we have screened Moonlight with guest speakers from the York LGBT forum to talk to us about LGBT+ rights. We also had Claire Ainsley, Executive Director of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation who spoke before our screening of Suffragette. We are always looking to work with local organisations so if you have an idea for a great event then we’d love to hear from you!
What we’re doing
We will be spending that funding we mentioned on making sure we keep on improving what we do and offering an affordable and local alternative to mainstream cinema, with the focus on the people not the profit. With the hall’s new refurbishment, and the upgrades we are making, we are coming back in style, bigger and better than ever!
If all that’s not enough then there is a licensed bar, popcorn and we have tunes on for half an hour before the film and an interval so people can have a chat. There’s also loads of free parking, we are completely accessible and standard tickets are only £5! You never know you might even win the blu ray DVD! For those of you who love what we do it only costs £5 to join as a member which then gets you £2 off each film we show and a free members event in January!
So what now?
Well what better way to kick off the new season than with The Greatest Showman?! Join us on Friday 27th July from 7pm and give us a try. Following that there’s a kids event with Paddington 2 on Saturday 4th August at 2pm, we are then showing Disney’s The Lion King at our very first outdoor event at Huntington Sports Club on North Lane on Saturday 26th August at dusk. Finally we will be bringing the Oscar winning performance of Gary Oldman in the huge Churchill biopic, Darkest Hour to the Folk Hall on 28th September.
We hope to see you at a film night soon! We are always on the lookout for volunteers to join our team so if you like what you’ve heard then do get in touch!
