The Danish Girl

Next on the Film at the Folk Hall programme is The Danish Girl starring the fabulous Eddie Redmayne (from whom I am yet to see a bad performance!) It’s a romantic drama set in the 1930’s, loosely inspired by the real lives of Danish painters Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener. The film chronicles the life of the first recipient of gender reassignment and the associated difficulties of such a procedure back in those times. It’s a very special screening for us as it has been supported by the Joseph Rowntree LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) allies network. As well as dealing delicately and beautifully with a powerful subject, the film also managed to pick up several accolades including a host of nominations for Oscar’s and Golden Globes and an Oscar win for Alicia Vikander in the best supporting actress category.
