On the 12th (and final) day of Halloween, keep it spooky with…
‘Trick ‘r Treat’ (2007). A series of seasonal tales taking place in the same small town on Halloween night.
I’ve recommended some terrific, under-valued modern horror movies over the past 11 days, but it’s only right that I leave you with my favourite Halloween film of all time.
‘Trick ‘R Treat’ does a better job than any other film (and yes, I include ‘Halloween’ in that) of capturing the spirit of Halloween; the much-loved rituals, traditions and superstitions, all in the service of creating something, not so much out-and-out scary (though it wouldn’t be proper if there weren’t some good scares), but SPOOKY.
‘Trick ‘r Treat’ generally favours suspense and quirky humour, creating a tangible unmistakable atmosphere. The overriding feeling you get from watching it is an overriding affection for the holiday. Its ’15’ certificate is almost a shame, for at heart its really a film that would appeal to children…or maybe its whole intention is to re-kindle the child-like love for the season in cynical, jaded grown-ups. If that’s the case, it sure does succeed. It deserves to be everybody’s essential annual viewing in the run-up to every October 31st.
